Queen of the Valley partners with NVUSD to promote health, fitness

Napa’s public schools are partnering with Queen of the Valley Medical Center to help meet the health needs of children at schools throughout Napa Valley Unified School District. “ I deeply appreciate our partnership with the Queen of the Valley,” said Dr. Laura Ryan, Administrator of Interventions for the District. “We value this partnership and look forward to working together in leveraging resources to meet identified need in our community,” agreed Dana Codron, Executive Director of Community Outreach for Queen of the Valley. “NVUSD is interested in promoting healthy lifestyles and student’s learning every school day,” Ryan added. “It is clear that there is a direct connection between healthy students and school success.” Ryan praised several program initiated by Queen of the Valley that are used on public school campuses, including: Children’s Mobile Dental Clinic , a motor home that made 4,000 visits to 10 school campuses in 2012, performing 1,932 procedures to more than 2,200 low-income Napa County children and students, aged six months to 21 years. In addition to clinic visits, oral health screens were conducted for 550 children at 16 preschool sites. Healthy for Life , an obesity-prevention program emphasizing fitness and healthy eating for 1,000 students, provides training and exercise equipment to 17 schools in the 2011-12 school year. Training was provided to 15 elementary school teachers and nine middle and high school teachers to incorporate this curriculum into physical education classes. Napa Valley Parent University , a collaboration between Queen of the Valley and On the Move, offers more than 50 classes at three elementary schools for parents in four areas – volunteerism, consumerism, how to raise a healthy child and access health services, and how to become a school, community or project leader. From July 1, 2012, to Jan. 31, 2013, some 559 parents made contact with the program at McPherson, Salvador and Shearer elementary schools. At Queen of the Valley we recognize and embrace the social obligation to collaborate, create and implement programs that address identified needs,” according to a Queen of the Valley overview of the collaborative programs with the school district. “Our relationship with schools is extremely valuable and core to our mission of improving the health and quality of life of people in the communities we serve.” Contact: Laura Ryan, Administrator of Intervention Assessments 707-253-3500 email: lryan@nvusd.k12.ca.us

Trout, salmon discovered in Vista 360 Pueblo Vista classrooms

Students at Vista 360 Pueblo Vista Environmental Science Magnet School spent several weeks recently learning about trout, raising trout in aquariums and finally releasing the fry into Lake Hennessey. The “Trout in the Classroom” project involved Allison Hanson’s second-grade class and Kendra Leach’s third- and fourth-grade combination class. After raising trout in special aquariums donated by the Napa Fly Fishers Association, the students released the fry on March 7 before visiting the Department of Fish and Wildlife Service’s fish hatchery on Silverado Trail. The second-graders studied the anatomy, life cycle and basic needs of fish, and compared them to other animals. They watched trout eggs change as they grew into alevin, then into fry. They completed writing projects related to the life cycle, including a digital report about each stage of the cycle. The third- and fourth-graders compared the life cycles of trout and salmon. They followed the migration of salmon, studying various habitats the fish encounter during their life. They also studied the role salmon and trout play in the food chain, and learned about threats to the salmon population from such dangers as water pollution and habitat loss. The highlight of the March 7 field trip was the hatchery, where students saw a tank containing more than 300,000 adult trout and the equipment necessary to grow the fish and keep them safe from birds and other predators. “The real excitement came when the hatchery manager, Mike Ficele, reached into a tank with a big net and hauled out some big trout for the students to see up close and touch if they dared,” said Helen Rocca, principal of Vista 360 Pueblo Vista. “The excitement on the students’ faces to see the fish up close and get to touch them was priceless.” For many of the students, said Rocca, it was the first time they had been to Lake Hennessey or a hatchery. “The teachers each elaborated on their trout project to meet the needs of their classroom objectives and science standards,” the principal added. “The teachers were able to capitalize on the many teachable moments that happen on an outdoor field trip. They not only talked about the wide variety of plants and animals they saw, but also the many ways we can be respectful of our environment and responsible to help it where we can.” In addition to Vista 360 Pueblo Vista, which emphasizes environmental sciences, the Napa Valley Unified School District magnet schools include Bel Aire Park Magnet School, which emphasizes the International Baccalaureate program; Salvador Magnet School, which emphasizes visual and performing arts; and Alta Heights Magnet School, which emphasizes math, art and science.
