Stephen Smith, University of Oregon, Meets with ACMS Teachers

Stephen Smith.jpg

Over the course of 3 days in April Stephen Smith from the University of Oregon met with small groups of ACMS teachers to discuss how to improve overall behavior by systematically teaching expectations, responding vs. reacting to problem behavior, and how to restore and repair relationships between staff and students.  On the 3rd day Stephen met with the school leadership and admin team for decision making and planning.  ACMS also had Dr. Smith visit last year and engage in a similar process.  As a result of many strategies and interventions implemented this year, ACMS has seen a 39% reduction in office discipline referrals and suspensions reduced by 67%.  Funding for Dr. Smith was through the PEI grant.

“I know there is a lot going on in our school today, and I mean A LOT; This conversation that we are having today with Steve is the most important.”  -  Principal Dan Scudero to his teachers

BEST & PBIS

Welcome!

What is PBIS & BEST?  PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.  BEST stands for "Building Effective Schools Together" and is our district’s adopted curriculum to implement PBIS.  PBIS is a comprehensive, 3-tiered approach to implementing positive and consistent student discipline systems in schools. Unlike other approaches to student discipline, PBIS encourages a positive climate schoolwide, in all locations and for all students, by focusing systematically on:

  1. The general school population (Tier 1: Schoolwide PBIS),
  2. Students at risk (Tier 2: Targeted PBIS) and
  3. Students with intensive or chronic behavioral and emotional problems (Tier 3: Intensive PBIS)

PBIS also recognizes that student discipline systems, including the definitions of and responses to problem behavior, need to be consistent across classroom and non-classroom settings.
