History

Mt.George was founded in 1936 as a 3 room, country school. (The oldest elementary school in Napa)  Over the years it has grown but has maintained the charm and comfort of a close community of students, parents, and staff.  Although Mt. George has a long history of academic excellence, about 5 years ago the staff and parents were looking for a way to ensure the educational program would continue to challenge our students in a 21st century world.  We began exploring the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate and found this world renowned organization had a vision for education that closely matched ours.  In December of 2010, we hosted a visit by the examiners of IB to become an authorized IB world school.  It was a highly successful visit and we are currently awaiting official word on authorization.

Learning Environment

Mt. George is a candidate school for the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Mt. George believes is important for our students.

Academic Environment

Our academic program includes the following components:

  • Internationalism: Students learn to beprepared to be successful anywhere in the world.  Students receive instruction in a second language: Spanish
  • Inquiry–based instruction: Each classroom participates in six units of study where they explore, ask questions, and research about themes in science, history, social studies, the environment, technology, language, math, and visual and performing arts.
  • Action: Students create opportunities based on what they have learned to use their knowledge and skills in real life application and be of service to their community and to make a positive difference toward a better world.

Parent Environment

Mt. George has an active parent community that includes many volunteer and community building opportunities.  We encourage parents to volunteer in classrooms and school events as well as participate in the learning and inquiry that is happening in the classroom.  Our Parent Club is open to all families and supports the educational program of our school.
