History
Canyon Oaks is the most recent elementary school to open in the Napa Valley Unified School District, opening in 2005 in response to expansive growth in the city of American Canyon. Students named the school and selected the mascot “The Mighty Oak” to show strength of character and wisdom.
Learning Environment
Canyon Oaks Elementary School is a diverse school supporting student learning both academically and socially. Staff, students and parents work together to create a sense of community through special events and programs. Monthly BEST Assemblies highlight our school focus on Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be your BEST, and students teach each other about what it means to be a “Mighty Oak”.
Academic Environment
Students at Canyon Oaks receive excellent academic instruction supported by collaborative grade level teams, research-based instructional programs and highly effective student engagement strategies. Students are also supported by the school-wide Positive Behavior Support programs BEST and Second Step. The recipient of a federal counseling grant, Canyon Oaks coordinates counseling services and community programs to help students develop the social and emotional skills to be successful at school and in life.
Parent Environment
Parents are encouraged to participate in the Parent Teacher Organization, School Site Council, and ELAC as well as represent our school on various district committees such as GATE and Superintendents Advisory. Parent volunteers help supervise students, assist in the classroom, and participate in a variety of parent activities offered through the PTO. Canyon Oaks Parent Teacher Organization hosts our annual Harvest Festival in October and Spring Art Festival in May. These events are designed to bring our school community together and celebrate our children.
